All throughout our younger years we are encouraged to draw and express ourselves through color. We were often asked what our favorite color was, and when it came time for entertainment drawing and coloring played a big role in that. But what happens when a person doesn't leave drawing and coloring behind in their adult years?
Christine Curry's mom is the art teacher at Valley Preparatory in Redlands, so it is really no wonder that she grew up with a love for art. In high school she dreamed of being a comic book writer or even an animator, but then she tried painting.
Curry started taking classes at the community college and honing her skills as an artist. She drew historical buildings, made a couple of acrylic paintings, and practiced small decorations on walls.
By the time she was 19 the owner of the book store she worked at, asked her to paint a mural on the storefront. Curry had never done a mural before, so she had to figure it out as she went. Passers by were impressed. Several people even commissioned her to paint art on their walls.
She slowly began the process of learning to paint murals, but she wanted to have a more structured learning environment, so she transferred to Otis College of Art and Design to earn a BFA in painting.
Curry moved to LA to learn more about the business. In LA she learned to draw what she felt instead of exactly what she was commissioned to do. She even had the chance to work with Kent Twitchell restoring two large scale freeway murals and one fresco (which is now in the Coronado Library).
In 2007, Curry completed her BFA in painting and moved back to Redlands. She is currently working on painting a series of local places in the IE.
She is inspired by Steven King novels, DaVinci paintings, and music. She focuses on lighting, facial expressions, and visual drama in order to make her paintings come to life.
She has created a large body of work in oil paintings. Some of her favorite subjects are history, old cars, roadside culture and Route 66. When she paints portraits she enjoys capturing a persons personality in her paintings. Other favorite subjects are music and architecture.
